The fellowship has Alumni include Professor Roger Davies (former President of the Royal Astronomical Society) and Sir Graham Hills (physical Chemist and former Governor of the BBC).

Amount of Money for the Fellowship

Each fellowship amounts to $50,000 per annum, paid quarterly by the ESU in equal installments of $12,500 each. This also offers £1,000 grant to each Fellow to assist with travel costs. Following a legacy left by Brigadier Charles Lindemann, the ESU has run the Fellowships since March 1972.

Fellows are asked to notify the ESU at least three weeks before the next installment is due. In addition, the ESU contributes £1,000 towards each Fellow’s airfare, which may be used for an outward or return flight. Fellows must liaise with the ESU before booking their outward flight. You are responsible for obtaining appropriate insurance cover for your Fellowship in the USA.

The Organization works with teachers to improve oracy skills and cross-cultural understanding so that all young people, regardless of their background, can make their voices heard.

The resources, programmes and competitions all teach two things. First, they teach students how to talk – how to structure a speech, summarise information, listen critically and to consider and address different audiences for example. Second, they help students to learn through talk.

By discussing current affairs and topical issues, in any class or subject, students not only acquire deeper subject knowledge but a greater awareness of the world around them. Their horizons broaden and they improve their ability to consider and evaluate diverse opinions and points of view.
